Correct Use of Prepositions

In a hurry to finish your draft, so many times it happens that a preposition rears its ugly head, and sends you looking for the right one to use. And you are not alone, it happens to the best of us. So here's a quick list of prepositions that I composed as a handy reference.

  •     File is saved ON a disk.
  •     File is copied TO a disk.
  •     File is located ON a computer but IN a folder or directory.
  •     Write a file TO a disk.
  •     Data is saved ON a disk.
  •     Data is read INTO memory.
  •     Data is stored INTO memory.
  •     CD is IN a drive.
  •     Text is copied TO a clipboard.
  •     Text is moved TO a clipboard.
  •     An XYZ text box is displayed IN a dialog box.
  •     Option is ON a menu.
  •     Option is IN a toolbox.
  •     Item is ON a tab.
  •     Button is ON a toolbar.
  •     Image is displayed ON a screen.
  •     Content is displayed ON a website.
  •     Application runs ON an operating system.
  •     Program runs ON an operating system.
