Tough Questions

Writing or Editing?

Now, that's a tough one. I started my career as a technical editor. Editing is an auto-pilot activity for me. Always has been. A favorite pastime since childhood turned into a full-fledged lucrative profession. And so, it breaks my heart to answer - writing or editing?

When I write, I create. I use my imagination and I get a sense of having achieved something. A sense of having "created" something, a sense of satisfaction.

When I edit, I kill. I kill someone else's imagination, and take away the originality of writers from their work. I try to discipline a writer, apply rules, and kill the fun (in the capacity of an editor, I get paid to do that). It just unfortunately happens to be something I am good at. I meant the editing part, not killing :-).

So the answer is...writing, of course!
